Weight Loss Reality Check, Let Us think Fresh In 2022
Hello All, how was your new year party? Hope you took care of COVID restrictions. IWB wishes all of you a very happy new year and a healthy year ahead.
In this new year, it’s time to talk about something that we haven’t discussed earlier. Yes, let us do a fresh weight loss reality check today. It is high time we know the reality of body composition and what weight loss really means. Let us bust some myths related to that! So, are you ready for it?
Consider this, when you step on the scale does it show only your body fat? Nope, it reflects each and every cell that your body is made up of. Along with body fat it reflects your body’s muscles, skeleton, the contents of your tummy and the 60% water that your body is made up of!
Difference between weight loss and fat loss
You must be aware of the fact that muscle is 3 times as dense as fat and exercising can help in adding more muscle to your body frame. But are you aware that by doing regular exercise you can increase bone density?
Many people step on the scale each morning and spoil their day’s mood by focusing on ‘the number’ that appears on it. If you don’t see a loss or even worse, happen to see a gain, you get all demotivated. Any human being would get demotivated for that matter! After all you are eating clean and working out each day. So, you happen to have some interest in seeing results. But like said above, you are not just made up of fat, your body weight includes muscles, skeleton and lots of other things too! The next time you step on the scale, remember that the number appearing is dependent on a number of variables and not just fat. Fat is just one of the variables.
The BMI truth
Medical professionals commonly use BMI (Body Mass Index) to determine a person’s ideal body weight based on the height and mass. While doctors all over the world use BMI, you have to consider the fact BMI was devised in 1800s and that was more than 200 years back. And that is a lot of time!
BMI may arguably be a useful way of obtaining the general idea of a the weight of an individual leading a sedentary lifestyle. It can be clearly seen that it doesn’t take the following factors into account:
- Lean-muscle mass,
- Bone density,
- Water retention
It leaves out several other factors too. Thus body mass index is an old fashioned way of measuring health.
Beyond ‘fat’ and ‘skinny’
Metrics like BMI have brought in oversimplifications like ‘fat’ and ‘skinny’, But as the fitness industry has witnessed a boom in the recent times, a lot of men and women have realized that they need not stick to these oversimplifications.
Women no longer want to be skinny. After all what fun is there in being reed thin? Instead, they aspire to be ‘healthy’ and that is based on individual body type or general health. So, we should detach ourselves from terms like ‘fat’ and ‘skinny’ and create bodies that are healthy, strong and able. Let go of the antique oversimplifications!
In order to get greater results, both men and women should have an exercise regime that has resistance training or lifting weights with cardiovascular exercises depending on an individual’s body fat levels and current goals.
So, you better toss that weighing scale of yours off the window and stop bothering about body mass index and weight loss. Instead of getting stuck up with terms like ‘fat’ and ‘skinny’, transform yourself into someone who feels and looks great!
So, think fresh in 2022 and do a weight loss reality check again.
