Weight Loss with Aquafaba; Is it possible?
Yesterday my newly married daughter sent me the picture of Hummus that my foodie son-in-law had prepared. With the ongoing Omicron scare and work-from-home scenario, this lovely couple is making efforts to begin cooking at home. Take a look at the picture of Hummus and carrots, Isn’t it amazing!
Their love for food (without spending time to cook) had always worried me as they were always ordering fancy junk food home. This picture made me feel so good and thankful to Omicron. So I was told that the water chickpeas are soaked in, known as Aquafaba, is a very nutritious liquid. My obvious question to myself was is weight loss with Aquafaba possible?
Thus began the search for Aquafaba
If you have ever cooked with chickpeas or a can of garbanzo beans, you must have smelled that heavenly nutty aroma of the water they are soaked in. That liquid or the leftover liquid in a can of chickpeas or garbanzo beans is known as Aquafaba. The word is a combination of the Latin words for water ‘aqua’ and bean ‘faba’ thus making it Aquafaba.
I realize that Aquafaba is a trendy new food with special interest and benefits for vegans. So basically Aquafaba is a liquid in which legumes like chickpeas or beans are soaked, cooked, and stored. This interesting ingredient has prominently been featured on social media. It is an ingredient that is used in the vegan way of cooking and is generally used as an egg substitute.
Aquafaba is being used by vegan bakers because they find it great to fluff up various baked goodies like cakes and brownies along with providing egg-like whipped up fluff and texture in meringue mousse and macaroons.
This vegan trend of using Aquafaba is being used by cooks in preparing mayonnaise also. Commonly, cooking experts advise substituting 45 ml Aquafaba for one egg.
Let’s talk about Aquafab nutritional data
When we talk about anything being useful for weight loss or not, we need to check its nutritional data. As far as Aquafaba is concerned, I have found that being a plant-based substitute, it is zero fat and cholesterol with very few carbs, protein, vitamins, and minerals. So what else do you need on your weight loss journey! One tablespoon of Aquafaba has not even five calories and none other nutrition. It won’t be wrong if I say that it is more like water for people on a weight loss journey.
Though undoubtedly as an egg replacement it can make newly converted vegan weight-conscious people happy since they can keep enjoying their favorite desserts without missing out on eggs.
Internet is full of recipes using Aquafaba but I don’t think they can be called really healthy. This egg replacement can never be anywhere near the nutritional goodness of egg. It is surely very low on calories but is that enough for a person who is struggling with weight issues?
If you are in a mood to try weight loss with Aquafaba, then you need to think twice but yes if you use it creatively, it can help you prepare vegan mayo, vegan butter, and vegan coconut macaroons easily.
A quick way to do the same is…
For vegan mayo, just blend a few spoonfuls of Aquafaba with apple cider vinegar, salt, olive oil, lemon juice, mustard powder. Blend it well like in the traditional mayo recipe.
For vegan butter, all you need to do is mix Aquafaba with some olive and coconut oil, along with apple cider vinegar and salt. Blend to get your homemade vegan butter.
For preparing vegan coconut macaroons, whip Aquafaba just like egg whites and fold in coconut flour and non-sugar sweetener to get your egg-free vegan macaroons.
Weight Loss with Aquafaba; Is it possible?
Yes, it is possible as surely it will help you cut down a massive number of calories, but you need to pay attention to your nutrition. So when you are in a mood to have a dessert with low calories, go for weight Loss with Aquafaba, it will make it happen.
