The Republic of Lithuania may not be a first travel choice, but I know many people have a lot of interest in this country. Located in the Baltic side of Europe, Lithuania shares borders with Latvia, Belarus, and Poland. Believe it or not, Lithuania is a high developed country and ranks high in the Human Development Index. So, just by knowing this, you must get an idea of how amazing a journey to this country would be. The capital of Lithuania is called Vilnius and has incredible baroque architecture, it’s stunning!. Today I decided to write about some interesting things to do in Vilnius.
As you may know, Lithuania is famous for its stunning landscapes, abundant green forest, and lakes. With so many landscapes worth of a medieval movie, a january lietuviskai would be the best option. On the other hand, the capital, Vilnius is famous for the baroque architecture you can find in its Old Town, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.
There are many reasons to pay a visit to Vilnius, Lithuania and some of them are the unique cuisines, many historical monuments, and super-friendly prices. Just to name some, but the amount of reasons and things to do in Vilnius is amazing, there’s something to do for everyone.
Things to do in Vilnius
Old Town Tour
One of the biggest attractions in Vilnius is its old town or historic center, which was declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage site in 1994. It is one of the largest survival of medieval towns of Europe. The baroque and gothic architecture is abundant and before WWII was one of the biggest Jewish centers. So, as you can imagine the amount of culture and history in a place like this is abundant, you’ll never get tired here.
Vilnius University
Is the oldest and famous university in the Baltic State and Europe. A visit to the university is really worth, you’ll be able to see the architecture and walk on the oldest halls where some of the greatest academics walked too, like Adam Mickiewicz. Also is home to some stunning rooms and art, you’ll feel like a medieval student.
KGB Museum
Called Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights is located in an original KGB building. There’s no better place for a KGB museum than a KGB building, lol. The museum takes shows the 50 years of history that leave behind the Soviet Union while occupying the country. The museum used to be called the Museum of Genocide Victims. You sure want to pay a visit to this interesting place.
Church Visit
Vilnius is a medieval capital and is full of old history and buildings, and there’s nothing more medieval and cool than an old Church. And in Vilnius you can find a bunch of cool-looking and amazing churches that you need to pat a visit, some of the most iconic are:
- Church of St Theresa
- St. Nicholas Church
- Church of St. Casimir
- Katedros Square and the Castle hill area
