A trip to Niagara Falls is something that most people recommend you do at least once in your lifetime. These three-sided magnificent waterfalls connect the American borders with the Canadian borders, making it the perfect trip for the weekend. You can even visit on a day trip, where you can do tons of activities in the area. Here are a few tips you can use when visiting Niagara Falls.

Decide Where You Are Staying

Niagara Falls lies between Ontario and New York State along the Niagara River. Some people can visit all three sides of the waterfalls, but others can’t on account of their visa documentation. Even if you are allowed to cross the borders, you still need to check whether they are open at the time of your trip. If you’re planning to stay for the weekend, you’ll have to decide where to book your accommodation. Both sides of the border give you the same spectacular views. The New York state park is located right next to the Falls, so consider booking your hotel on the American side if you want to take a nature hike. Consider staying in a hotel with views of the Falls. It might be a bit expensive than other accommodations, but it’s definitely worth it!

Niagara Falls Tours

There are boat tours on both sides of the border. If you are on the American side, there are several tours you can try. You can take a New York to Niagara Falls bus tour and take a boat tour from there. One of the most famous tours is the Maid of the Mist, but be sure to have your waterproof jackets on because you will definitely get wet. If you are an adrenaline junkie, you can’t miss the jet boat tour that takes you right in the middle of the action by speeding through the Niagara River rapids. You can also catch a night boat tour to watch the illuminated grand waterfalls at night.

If you’re visiting on the Canadian side, you can catch the Voyage to the Falls tour, which is the most popular tour to book on that side. Another great tour is the Journey Behind the Falls, which takes you to see the waterfalls from a unique perspective. You get to see the waterfalls on the observation platform from behind and walk through a series of tunnels that takes you toward the bottom of the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian border.

Places to Visit at the Falls

There are other activities you can do around the waterfalls. If you are on the Canadian side, make sure to visit the Skylon Tower that overlooks the Falls. You can witness the waterfalls as you go up the 520-foot tower in the glass elevators while taking pictures as you travel upward. You can have dinner in the Revolving Dining Room, which gives you a 360-degree view. Another option is the Summit Suite Buffet, which offers a wide range of delicious foods. If you feel like splurging, you can book a combo tour that takes you on a helicopter ride over the Falls, a river cruise, and a Journey Behind the Falls tour, which includes dinner at the Summit Suite Buffet. You can also try ziplining over the Niagara River where you land at the base of the Horseshoe Falls. If that seems like too much adventure for you, then take a SkyWheel ride, where you can get stellar views of the Falls and what lies beyond.

If you’re visiting on the American side, you can still see the Horseshoe Falls from Goat Island. Visit the Terrapin Point Lookout for amazing views of the Niagara Gorge and the Falls. You’ll have to cross a bridge, where you can see the Cave of the Winds and take tons of pictures. It is the best thing to do on the American side, where you walk on the platforms to reach the Bridal Veil Falls. Make sure to dress appropriately for the occasion because you will surely get soaked from this walk. For a less wet experience, you can visit Old Fort Niagara, which was built in 1726.

The beauty of Niagara Falls is that it can be visited anytime during the year. Make sure to book your trip in advance if you plan to go in the high season, especially in the summer. In all cases, make sure to have a waterproof jacket or poncho. Keep your passport, wallet, phone, and camera in a waterproof bag to avoid getting them wet. Consider seeing the Falls at night to enjoy the colorful illumination.
