This is a gorgeous city in Florida with a ton of canals. Some have even given it the nickname Venice of America. The place is heaven for those looking for gorgeous beaches, but it is also a rich place in history and culture from native settlers. Six of my family’s favorite things to do in Fort Lauderdale whenever we go for a visit.
For some time, they were known as a crazy party place, but they have done a great job at also coming up with attractions and activities that also cater to families or a more mature group of travelers who prefer relaxing over a night out.
So keep scrolling down to find different places to visit and things to do in Fort Lauderdale for all tastes.
Things to Do in Fort Lauderdale
The first thing you should do is to get a car rental in Fort Lauderdale. I always say that public transport isn’t the best idea if you want to explore a city on your own schedule and in a relaxed way. Plus, nothing beats the privacy of having your own car.
Fort Lauderdale Beach Park
As mentioned before, Fort Lauderdale has a ton of gorgeous beaches, so you can’t come here without visiting one. Their beach park is definitely one of my favorite spots to visit. To being with, it is a free park with tons of facilities that will allow you to do much more than beach-bumming. There are volleyball and basketball courts, outdoor showers, restrooms, a playground, and a picnic area with tables and grills.
You can spend a whole day here with your family without getting bored. Plus, you will feel safe at all times because there are life ¡guards on duty all day long.
Boat Tours
Since there is so much water around the city, you will find no shortage of companies offering boat tours. This means that you will have a ton of options that include traditional sightseeing outings, fishing charters, and even some offer themed excursions.
Exploring the local crystal clear waters is a must while in Fort Lauderdale.
Flamingo Gardens
This is a wildlife animal sanctuary where you get to see up close different species of animals. There are also attractions like a wildlife show, a tram to explore the property, hiking trails, the aviary, animal exhibits (pumas, turtles, alligators) and of course, free flamingos everywhere.
Bonnet House Museum and Gardens
This is a house with a long and romantic history that started in 1919. It all started by a father who gifted this property to his daughter (Helen) as a wedding gift. The newlyweds started building their home here but had to stop due to the death of Helen in 1925.
The house was only completed until 1931 when Helen’s widower finally married again. The house was later donated to the state’s Trust for Historic Preservation, opening it to visitors for guided tours.
Sawgrass Recreation Park
This is the place to visit if you are looking for an adventure in the Florida Everglades. These guys offer airboat tours that will allow you to see local wildlife in their natural habitat. Keep your eyes open, you might find alligators hiding near the shore
If you are feeling particularly brave, you might want to take the night version of this tour. Tours start at 9:30 a.m. daily and the last one leaves at 5 p.m, so you can drop by at any time during the day.
As you can see, most of the options that I mentioned above offer hours of entertainment and fun. You will have to plan at least one or two days aside from the park time if you want to truly enjoy Orlando. Rent a car in Fort Lauderdale and set off on some of the most amazing adventures that the area has for travelers.
