Stay in a Cabin for the Rustic Feel

The Birch Forest Lodge right at Pelican Lake is an excellent option when staying in the northern part of Minnesota. These types of cabin rentals MN are wonderful to get away from the crowds in the big city and stretch out a bit.

The resort has different cabins nearby the lake, with a boat launch and raft accessible from their beach. The cabins are nestled near trees for privacy and seclusion. Some cabins have multiple rooms and a full kitchen for self-catering if you prefer.

Boat Rentals and Fishing

Fishing for bass (huge ones are still present), pan fish, and northern pike are plentiful in Pelican Lake with the occasional walleye fish if you’re lucky. Kids aged fifteen and younger are permitted to fish without a Minnesota fishing license, but anyone older must possess a Minnesota fishing license to do so. If you’re a keen fisherman or fisherwoman, bring your rod and tackle for sure.

Boat rentals are an interesting option to get out on the lake. There’s a Manitou Pontoon which is a twenty-footer, a Lund Fury with a powerful 4-stroke engine, and the Crestliner Fish Hawk which seats two people comfortably. Each requires a deposit and can be rented by the day or week. There are mooring fees if you intend to keep the boat for longer than a day.

Additionally, there’s access to water toys for adults and kids to play on, too.

Getting Out and About

The Orr Bogwalk combines a manageable half-mile walk along a boardwalk that tracks down to the bog. There’s an active ecosystem in the area, which keen observers will enjoy picking up on through nature’s cues. The path is maintained properly, making it a reasonable walk for people with good balance. There’s also the Orr’s Visitor Center to learn more about the area before heading out.

The Vermilion Falls is reached by hiking for just 10 minutes along a path. The waterfall is 10 feet across, backed by granite, and sends water cascading down to the flowing river below.

For the more adventurous, the Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary is a 6-mile drive away from the lodge. It began as the home of logger Vince Shute whose evening cookouts would attract the black bears to his camp. Eventually, he began welcoming the bears into the camp and feeding them. While Vince has now passed on, the American Bear Assn. Owns the land now and maintains the preserve for both bears and human visitors to stop by.

A trip over to Northern Minnesota is well worth it for anyone who is attracted to wildlife, getting on the water, and enjoying the great outdoors.
