How did The Weeknd put his latest single on a saw blade?

It’s not every day that one of the biggest musical superstars in the world crosses over with the world of DIY. Earlier this week, music sensation Abel Tesfaye, better known by his pseudonym “The Weeknd,” announced he would be printing his latest single on a rather unique vinyl format: a circular saw blade.

Through a collaboration with the Brooklyn-based art collective MSCHF, the Weeknd’s recent track “Out of Time” will be turned into 25 vinyl records doubling as saw blades. The records look like authentic saw blades, but MSCHF warns against actually using them in a DIY project.

“Do not use Vinyl Blade on a saw,” MSCHF warned. “It is not rated or intended for use as a functional saw blade. Attempting to use Vinyl Blade on a saw could result in serious injury or death.”

On a website announcing the collaboration, MSCHF explained exactly how they were able to pull off the construction of this novel limited-edition vinyl.

“The record grooves are engraved into a copper band via direct metal mastering, which is then inset in the saw blade body,” reads the site. “The blade itself is a carbide-tipped 12″ combo blade–for both rips and crosscuts–with powdercoated color and graphics.”

All 25 of the saw blade vinyls were auctioned off on April 8, 2022, each with a starting bid set at $1,000.
