62,000 Amana / Daikin Air Conditioners Recalled Due to Fire Hazard

Right now, thousands of people across the United States are setting their air conditioners. But if you own an Amana air conditioner from Daikin Comfort Technologies, you should double-check your AC unit before turning it on. The CPSC has deemed thousands of Amana air conditioners unsafe due to fire and burn hazards.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Amana air conditioner recall, including which products are being recalled, why they’re being recalled, and what to do if you own a recalled unit.

Which Products Are Being Recalled

This recall specifically targets 62,100 Amana packaged terminal air conditioners and heat pumps (PTACs) equipped with “DigiAir” modules. The recalled units all have a model number that begins with “PMH” or “PMC,” located on the label below the control board. They also have “Amana” printed on their control covers. All affected air conditioners were sold in the US from May 2015 to January 2023 for $1200 to $1400. About 300 units were also sold in Canada.

Why the Amana Air Conditioners Are Being Recalled

The DigiAir modules—make-up air systems with configurable dehumidification—can overheat. As a result, the recalled Amana air conditioners pose a risk of burns and fire. So far, Daikin has received 52 reports of the DigiAir compressor overheating. 10 of these incidents resulted in fires.

Fortunately, Daikin has not received any reports of injury. (To limit the risk of overheating in functioning AC units, be sure to clean their filters regularly.)
